Why We've got so many Pot Holes

Most folks think the reason for all those Pot Holes in our roads is either sub-standard materials or improper road building methods. Nope, it's all a matter of attitude. It's our attitude about almost everything that we own collectively rather than personally.

We weren't always that way. At one time, we would have insisted that truck routes be established and load bearing capacities of our roads be posted on signs and rigidly enforced. There was a time when we just couldn't afford to throw money into a Pot Hole by continuously repairing it.

It was back in thirty-three, when we started getting the treatment. In the midst of the Great Depression, people were broken financially and spiritually. There didn't seem to be any hope. Folks had been broke for over three years and hadn't had a legal cold beer in over fourteen years. Talk about the blues!

Good old Franklin D. ROOSEVELT came along and promised Cold Beer, A New Deal, and Social Security. When he was elected, he delivered on his promises and much more;

The Public Works Administration put 650,000 people back to work. They built courthouses and hospitals, schools and libraries, bridges and tunnels, roads and highways, and dams and levees.

Unemployment insurance was introduced as an important element of the New Deal in 1935. It was part of the Social Security act of 1935. U.S. Welfare programs were introduced at the end of World War II and have produced three generations of Welfare families. Some young teenagers have never known a family member, who has had a job.

The Federal Aid Highway Act, created in 1956, insures that the Federal Government will contribute 90% of the cost for roads in the Interstate highway system. The Fifties brought Instant Gratification through E-Z credit. Buy now, pay later, who cares about the cost of financing. If you're over extended then just borrow more money. If you get in too deep, go Bankrupt. You can do it every seven years.

So in conclusion: If you don't have to work, If you don't have to pay, If you don't have to save, The Fed. is going to keep you secure, And Slick Willie is going to keep you healthy,

Then why worry about a few silly little Pot Holes?
